What began as a news blog appears to have turned into more than this since I have been away from Blighty.

It has become what a blog literally was first thought to be - an online diary.

I will be back in England in two weeks. I will visit Napier and a few other places before I spend a few days in Auckland and get the plane home.

I don't blame the city - I know that this feeling is completely subjective, animistic and irrational. But the city of Wellies right now gives me nothing but bad vibes due to the events which have transpired here. I wish I could say otherwise but wishes aren't horses. I may be at a turning point in my life. When I return to the UK I should be better able to deal with my problems.

When I am back in the UK this blog shall return to what it was - a commentary about news and culture.

Meanwhile I would like to thank my friends on the blogosphere for their support and for keeping me writing through these days.

Liz, hope the last two weeks go ok for you. You might find that all the things you don't like get magnified by the knowledge that you will soon (but not soon enough) be shot of them, but on the other hand, knowledge that you have a fixed time limit might (and perhaps should) allow you to endure them a bit better.

I hope you don't find Auckland a let-down after all my witterings about it! I probably said enough (in fact I _know_ I said a lot more than I should) so I will say no more!

Napier is interesting particularly if you like Art Deco, though it's been so many years now I can't remember the place. I do know that not far from there are some decent wineries, and the Spectator wine correspondent raved about the place when he did a tour there a few years ago.

Nobody's view of their city is entirely rational. Emotion comes into a lot of it, as it does in every area of life whether we choose to admit it or not. I agree with the cliche that we don't have emotions - they have us.

Another cliche (I like them, you'll have gathered - things rarely become cliches without having an element of truth) which springs to mind is that you always regret the things you don't do, rather than what you do do. I am sure in time you will (if not already) come to value what you learned and experienced on the trip even if there were some painful side effects and even if you feel it was too long and got in the way of other pursuits. I can honestly say I've never regretted any overseas venture I've undertaken (Kiwis are like this, you might have noticed), even being violently sick by the Red Sea thanks to some dodgy food and a dodgy jeep ride (even though Mrs Umpire was very much less than impressed by my power-vomiting like a 21st birthday in the lobby of a hotel which earned me a reputation never lost amongst the friends made on that trip). There's nothing to beat experiencing another culture even if it only confirms your own feeling of superiority (or inferiority come to that).

Looking forward to reading the rest of your travel notes. You might find as I always do that posts you think won't be of much interest generate the biggest responses.

Best for the rest of the trip,

P-Ump.
